Well, we’ve arrived back on the auld sod with a bang and I must say we’ve gotten quite a shock about how bad things are. You only hear bits and bobs about the state of the country when you are outside it and there’s only so much reading RTE and the Independent online can tell you – I tend to turn off, being overdosed with more soap star news and political point scoring than actual news.

So anyway, the grumbling Rambling Man is back and let that be the end of it.

What I really wanted to talk about was the state of the roads in Waterford … they are atrocious and the new motor is already suffering from banjaxed shock absorbers …

The only things I can think of for the reasons behind these potholed filled streets are the following …

1) Bad planning … i.e. new housing estates go in along small, country roads and suddenly there is a need for major water, sewage and gas pipes to be laid – they can go nowhere else, so the road gets massacred as quickly and inefficiently as possible.

2) The standard of workmanship in a lot of the roadworks is sub standard. There – I’ve said it ! We can’t fill in and smooth over holes for the life of us ! I think most of the navvies get more for digging up a hole that for filling one back in.
Another thing is the quality of the materials that go back into these holes and trenches created by roadworks. It looks to be tar like, gravelly rubbish which virtually washes away with the first daycent shower of rain.

Bad workmanship, bad materials, bad planning … are these things hard to do correctly ?
