The Queen Marie
by the Rambling Man
The battered old boat sits on the water’s edge;
just far enough back not to get wet
but near enough to want to.
only the feet of its trailer dip into the sea,
the bow points inwards, towards some imagined journey …
the blue body is fading and the cabin crowns a rusted frame.
sometimes if the wind blows, the water rises far enough
to wet the last plank on the keel, and the tip of the prop;
what good is an engine if not for oil – or what good is a boat if not for water.
then one day she’s gone, just 20 feet but it feels like a mile;
bright blue and white, now smiling between the swells.
free to bob and weave, to fish and sail
free to be – the Queen Marie.

Just back from a mad dash to the dairy – aka the garage/corner shop – whereby, when I asked the cashier was there a charge for the plastic bag, he laughed and said “You must be Irish !”
And then he told me this joke … which he seemed to think was THE best Irish joke ever told … it is funny like, but not for hours !
Paddy and Mick were out duck shooting and they are hard at it for the whole day when one of them turns to the other and says “Jaysis Paddy we’re not having much luck are we ?”
“I think I know what the problem is” says the other one “We’re not throwing the dog high enough in the air !”
Oh my !
Without Custard December 10, 2008Posted by Rambling Man in Emigration, General Bloggery, Poetry & Humor.
Well dear readers, the good news is I’m back !! but not just yet … I am returning from the Antipodes early in the New Year and blogging can again start in earnest – I must say I’ve missed it.
Now on to a little New Zealand ditty picked up this morning in my local bakery …
Me: Can I have an apple scroll please ?
Assistant: Sure. Do you want the one with custard in it or the uncustarded one ?
Me: Erm … the one with no custard perhaps ?
Assistant: Sweet. The uncustarded one it is !
So there you have it … the adjective to describe the lack of custard in a scroll … uncustarded ! You heard it here first !
