Don’t look now all ye lovers of Eurovision, but Dustin the Turkey is in with a shout to represent Ireland at the upcoming song contest in Belgrade.
Oh how the mighty have fallen ! A quick interlude for those of you who haven’t been subjected to this foul fowl … Dustin Hoffmann Junior is a children’s and more recently an adult leaning TV puppet. Yes he’s an actual puppet who the children and generation X of Ireland have virtually grown up on – you name it he’s done it …. TV presenter, comedian, tonnes of hit records, celebrity status etc.
Now don’t get me wrong, I was at one point a big fan of Dustin and he’s been the only Irish TV constant to have gotten away with blue murder and downright cheekiness when faced with quite important people … but for the organisers of EuroSong Ireland to allow an act with a puppet as the headline to enter, just shows what a farce the Eurovision has become.
No longer will the songwriters of Ireland be able to showcase their talents in EuroSong Ireland – how could anyone look any of them in the face and hold in the laughter ? “You mean the contest that turkey won last year ?” (in all senses of the word ?)
Is this what we want the country to be represented by ? Is there not a happy-clappy-jumpy, psuedo folk hippy hopper band out there that can produce a Euro-tastic one line stick in your head Hasselhoff-esque number to enter instead ? If this goes ahead, and remembering we came last in 2007, the face of Irish song writing will have changed forever because Dustin might just go and win the thing – such is the mainland European audience’s love of all things kitsch – on other words, all things musically awful !
Ireland – land of Bertie and Dustin the Eurovision Turkey … thank God I’m emigrating !
