Cleaning a ring October 25, 2007

It was recently mentioned to me that my wedding ring was looking a bit forlorn and I had to agree.   After only 3 years it has taken on quite a battered and bruised look.

Does anyone know what can be done to clean it ?  I guess the jewellers can clean it for you but this would likely be expensive.

I’ve heard everything from dipping it in Coca-Cola to washing it with lemon juice and sand.

Any suggestions, oh great hordes of knowledgeable readers ?

Do the washing up! Bet it scores some brownie points with the good lady, as well!

Seriously!

Soak the ring for a few minutes in a mild washing-up liquid solution, and then scrub it with an old toothbrush (or, if you are really well equipped, in terms of archaic kitchen utensils, one of those peculiar bottle cleaner brushes). Rinse it in warm water, and your ring is rejuvenated!

ps: “It was mentioned” – that’s judicious use of the passive voice if ever I heard it!

White toothpaste works a treat on all jewelry; especially great for diamonds. Just scrub with with an old toothbrush and rinse – it’ll be gleaming!

thanks all … i’ll give it a try. i was particularly intrigued by the mention of putting it into a bowl of coke but thought this might do more damage than good.

francis – yes it was rather “mentioned” in a “get your ring sorted mate!” kind of way !
