Lorem ipsum dolor set … ever come across these Latin words ? You see them everywhere from printing samples to website mockups to academic literature. But what are they and why exactly have they become the international standard for online space fillers and dummy text ?

You can find a very interesting article (if space fillers tickle your wick !) here which explains what it is and where it came from. The words themselves, of course, are intended to show how the type will look before the text and pages are available.

‘Lorem ipsum’ comes from a book that was quite popular in, as they say around here, Ould God’s time ! “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) was its name – written around 45 BC by the bould Marcus Tullius Cicero.

A 1914 translation reads : “Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?”

Jaysis weren’t they right clever fellas them Romans all the same hah ? And if that wasn’t enough, you can now buy a Lorem Ipsum mug ! You saw it here first …

Hi ! Thanks for your friendly reply… yes, I am looking forward to watching the rugby cup unfolding. We play Japan first with an Irish rerferee. On the tv today, the Aussie team in Lyon seem pretty sure of themselves, and think they should keep winning every second World Cup. I hope it comes down to Australia vs Ireland, then I’ll be happy for however succeeds – Good luck against France on the 21st!
