Ireland rugby squads announced May 1, 2007

The announcement of Ireland’s summer rugby tour to Argentina makes for some interesting reading. There are several inclusions that are sure to become talking points and with the majority of the bigger names not travelling, places on the plane to France in September are very much up for grabs.

According to David Kelly’s report in the Irish Independent today (subcription req.), Eddie O’Sullivan has said that half of his World Cup squad places are up for grabs … that makes for interesting reading with players named in the A squad not entirely out of the running. The A’s have a 3 game program at the end of May, playing Canada and the New Zealand Maori, culminating in the Churchill Cup at Twickenham on June 2nd while the senior squad play 2 tough tests against Argentina on May 26th and June 2nd again. I’m not sure if they’ll play any provincial or representative games.

From a Munster point of view it’s great to see 8 of their squad going to Argentina including well earned call-ups for Barry Murphy and Tomás O’Leary, with Ian Dowling the one missing out. The latter also doesn’t make the A panel. Uncapped forward Tony Buckley does make it however and Munster eyes will be on him and Brian Carney to see how they cope at this level. Gavin Duffy is the only Connacht player to make the squad while all in all, there are 6 uncapped players.

I think I might be looking forward more to the A side’s games with the likes of Keith Earls, Luke Fitzgerald and Jonny Sexton vying for places at a higher level … let’s hope they all give a good account of themselves.

Managed to get tickets to see the boys play the Argies in Paris during the world cup in September. I’m hoping after their experimenting down in South America that they go out in Paris and give them a good hiding.

its france I’m worried about – we owe them at least one hiding !
