Paddy the Tourist

by the Rambling Man

Paddy the tourist stands in Dublin town square
And scratchin’ his head, at a map he does stare
“These Irish placenames” says he, I just can’t figure out,
and the people who named them are crazy, no doubt !”

“You’ve got Knobber and Muff and a place called Goleen,
theres Collon, and Callan and Ballypooreen;
And I think that says ‘Bansha’ but sure I couldn’t be sure,
it’s there next to Naul and a town called Rathnure …”

“Drumshanbo’s up here and thats Termonfeckin,
turn right at Bruree and you’ll end up in Killeshin !”
“Can names like Furbo and Fenit be right ?”
said Paddy perplexed with his face showing fright …

With Moate and Moynalty and the strange Ringaskiddy
poor Paddy was startin’ to feel a bit giddy,
He saw Oola and Oulart and Emo and Cong
and the pain in his head was getting quite strong !

When last seen, poor Paddy was heading away
his head held low in confused disarray
the signpost said Elphin, or did it say Sneem ?
but my bet’s on Aughrim or Ballaghaderreen …
